Abstract:

PURPOSE: To easily obtain the subject compound in high optical purity at a low cost by the asymmetric hydrogenation of 4-methylene-2-oxetanone in the presence of a ruthenium-optically active phosphine complex as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound is produced by reacting easily available 4-methylene-2-oxetanone in a solvent (e.g. methylene chloride) at room temperature to 100°C under hydrogen pressure of 5-150kg/cm2 using a ruthenium-optically active phosphine complex as a catalyst and preferably adding a tertiary amine (e.g. diisopropylethylamine) to the reaction system. The ruthenium-optically active phosphine complex used as a catalyst is preferably prepared by using metallic ruthenium and an optically active phosphine at a molar ratio of 1:(1-0.95). The objective compound is useful as a raw material for polymer, synthetic raw material for pharmaceuticals and intermediate used in organic synthetic chemical industries, e.g. intermediate for liquid crystal material.
