Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an optically active compound by which the optically active compound used as a raw material for an oxazolidinedione derivative useful as a treating agent for diabetes is produced in a high yield and high purity by performing a reduction reaction of a specific aromatic compound in the presence of a specified ruthenium compound.
SOLUTION: The objective optically active compound of formula III is obtained by performing a reduction reaction of (A) a compound of formula I [R is a (substituted) hydrocarbon group or a (substituted) heterocyclic group; Y is CO, CH(OH), etc.; R1 and R4 are each H or a 1-4C alkyl; A is a divalent 1-7C aliphatic hydrocarbon group; ring E is a benzene ring (substituted by one or two substituting groups); (m) is 0 or 1; (n) is 0-2] in the presence of (B) a compound of formula II [W is an optically active tertiary phosphine; M is Zn, Al, Ti or Sn; X is N(C2H5)3 (B1), CH3CO2 (B2), etc., with the proviso that, when X is B1, (1) is 2 and (h) is 1, when M is Zn, (k) is 4, when M is Al, (k) is 5, when M is Ti or Sn, (k) is 6, etc.], for example, under 30-110kg/cm2 hydrogen pressure at 5-120°C in an organic solvent.
