Abstract:

PURPOSE: To selectively obtain in high yield an optically active erythro-3- amino-1,2-epoxy form with desired configuration by reducing an optically active threo-amino-2-substituted butyric ester derivative and by epoxidizing the product.
CONSTITUTION: This compound of formula III can be obtained by reducing an optically active threo-3-amino-2-substituted butyric ester derivative of formula I (R1 is a 3-12C hydrocarbon; R2 is a (protected) amino; R3 is a 1-12C hydrocarbon residue; R4 is an ester residue; when the configuration of *3 is S- configuration, that of *2 is R-configuration, when the configuration of *3 is R-configuration, that of *2 is S-configuration) followed by epoxidizing the resultant optically active threo-3-amino-2-substituted-1-butanol derivative of formula II in the presence of a base.
