PURPOSE: To obtain an oxo compound by treating a secondary hydroxyl group- containing compound with chlorine gas in an aqueous solvent in an acidic condition in the absence of a catalyst at room temperature to efficiently oxidize only the secondary hydroxyl group even in the coexistence of a primary hydroxyl group.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A compound having at least a secondary hydroxyl group, preferably a compound of formula I (R1, R2 are 1-20C alkyl, or one of R1, R2 is 1-20C alkyl, and the other is nitro, carboxyl sulfoxyl, etc.,) or formula II (n is 2-5; R3 is 1-20C alkyl, 1-20C alkoxy, nitro, carboxyl, etc.,), is treated with chlorine gas in an aqueous solvent or in the mixture solvent of water with a 1-3C monohydric alcohol under an acidic condition to selectively oxidize the secondary hydroxyl group into the corresponding oxo compound. The treatment using the chlorine gas is preferably performed in the solvent controlled to a pH of 0.5-7.0.
