PURPOSE: To obtain a polyalkoxy aromatic compd. in simplified processes without requiring neutralization, without hazard of explosion, and without production of dimethylether in a reaction solvent compared to a conventional method which uses an excess amt. of sodium methylate.

CONSTITUTION: An aromatic compd. having one or more halogen atoms and one or more OH groups is made to react with an alkali metal or alkali earth metal alcoholate in the presence of copper and/or copper compd., and if possible, in the coexistence of an assistant catalyst to be alkoxylated to obtain an aromatic compd. having one or more alkoxy groups and one or more OH groups. Then the obtd. compd. is made to react with an alkylating agent selected from a lower alkyl halide, a dialkylsulfate and a disalkylcarbonate. In the last stage of alkoxylation, CO2 is introduced in an amt. corresponding to the amt. of unreacted alkali metal or alkaline earth metal alcoholate for O-alkylation. Thus, a polyalkoxylated aromatic compd. is advantageously obtd.
