Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject polymer having low polymerization degree in high yield by polymerizing an allyltrialkyl ammonium salt in the presence of a radical initiator such as a hydroperoxide compound in a solvent such as a polyhydric alcohol.
SOLUTION: An allyltrialkyl ammonium salt of formula I [R and R1 are each a 1-4C alkyl; R2 is a 1-4C alkyl or benzyl; Xn- is anion; (n) is a valence of an anion] is polymerized in the presence of a radical initiator selected from a hydroperoxide compound of formula II (R3 is methyl or phenyl) and hydrogen peroxide in a solvent comprising a polyhydric alcohol or a mixture of the polyhydric alcohol with water to provide the objective poly(allyltrialkyl ammonium salt) containing a recurring unit of formula III.
