PURPOSE: To provide a production process whereby the phase separation after the interfacial polymerization can be easily performed, and the produced polyarylate has a low content of residual salts and is excellent in optical properties especially transparency.
CONSTITUTION: This production process is the one for producing a polyarylate by an interfacial polymerization process comprising mixing an alkaline aqueous solution of an aromatic diol with a halohydrocarbon solution of an aromatic dicarboxylic halide, which process comprises adding a phase transfer catalyst satisfying the relationship: 200≥(Σ0-ΣC)/0.1≤60(dyn.1/cm.mol) and used in an amount satisfying the relationship: 0.1≤MCAT/MBP x 100≤2.0 (wherein Σis the interfacial tension (dyn/cm) between water and the halohydrocarbon solvent at 20°C, ΣC is the interfacial tension (dyn/cm) between a 0.1M aqueous phase transfer catalyst solution and the halohydrocarbon solvent, MCAT is the number of moles of the phase transfer catalyst used, and MBP is the number of moles of the aromatic diol used in polymerization).
