PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound having a viscosity high enough for melt molding and a low impurity content, by reacting a polyhalogenated aromatic compound with an alkali sulfide in an organic amide solvent in the presence of an alkali metal formate.
CONSTITUTION: A polyhalogenated aromatic compound (e.g., p-dichlorobenzene or dichlorodiphenyl sulfone) is reacted with an alkali sulfide (e.g., sodium sulfide) in an organic amide solvent (e.g., N-methyl-2-pyrrolodone or dimethylformamide) in the presence of an alkali metal formate (e.g., sodium formate). In this way, a polyarylene sulfide which has a high degree of polymerization, a high melt viscosity, and a low impurity content and which need not be subjected to treatment such as thickening by heat crosslinking or purification can be obtained. The obtained polyarylene sulfide can be suitably used as a material for films, fibers, etc.
