Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a polyarylene thioether which is useful as an engineering plastics because of its excellent chemical resistance, dimensional stability and processability by photooxidative polymerization of a specific thiophenol in the presence of a specific photosensitizer simply and efficiently.
CONSTITUTION: The objective polymer is obtained by effecting photooxidative polymerization of a thiophenol of formula I (R1, R2 are lower alkyl, lower alkoxy; R3, R4 are H, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy) and/or a diphenyl disulfide of formula II (R5 to R8 are lower alkyl, lower alkoxy; R9 to R12 are H, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy) in the presence of a photosensitizer (preferably more than 1.0V of oxidation-reduction potential under photo-excited states based on the silver/silver chloride standard), consisting of a cyanobezene of formula III (R13 to R18 are H, cyano).
