To obtain the subject polymer useful for facial cream, etc., as a thickener from a hydrophobic monomer by emulsion polymerizing in the presence of a specific compound.
In an emulsion polymerization of (A) a hydrophobic monomer and (B) a water-soluble monomer, as necessary, (C) at least one kind of compound formable of a supermolecular structure is existed. Preferably, as the component C, a compound having cyclodextrin structure, especially α- cyclodextrin, β-cyclodextrin, -cyclodextrin or α-cyclodextrin and/or a chemically modified cyclodextrin is used and a molar ratio of (the component A/the component C) is made within the range of (5,000/1)-(1/5), and an aqueous medium is composed of water and an organic liquid compatible with water, then as the component A, especially methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate or butyl acryltate or the like is used.
