PURPOSE: To provide the method by which a polymer having two or more hy droxyl groups at one end and at least one hydroxyl group at the other is effi ciently and easily obtained at low cost from a wide range of vinyl monomers; to provide a composition containing the polymer; and to provide a polymer derived from the composition.
CONSTITUTION: A vinyl monomer (a) is polymerized in the presence of alcohols (b) comprising a polyhydric alcohol as an essential ingredient using an initiator system (c) comprising hydrogen peroxide as an essential ingredient substantially in the absence of any substance other than the ingredients (a), (b), and (c) to thereby obtain a polymer. This polymer is used as an essential ingredient to prepare a composition. A polymer is derived from the composition.
