Abstract:
PURPOSE:To efficiently obtain polymer particles having a narrow particle diameter distribution by introducing a liquid feedstock into the space between two coaxial cylinders disposed vertically and polymerizing the feedstock by suspension polymerization while rotating either or both of the cylinders around the axis so as to generate Taylor vortexes. CONSTITUTION:An inner cylinder 2 is coaxially disposed in a cylindrical reactor 10, and the cylinders 2 and 10 are installed with the axis 6 extending perpendicularly. A liquid feedstock 9 (e.g. styrene solution) is introduced into the space between the two coaxial cylinders 10 and 2, and at least either of the cylinders 10 and 2 is rotated around the axis 6 to generate Taylor vortexes in the feedstock 9. Thus, low-shear mixing flows are formed. That is, flows in the form of stacked doughnuts are formed and circulate around the axis 6 in the same direction. However, when the doughnut flows are viewed on a cross section including the axis 6, any pair of two adjacent doughnuts also has reverse rotations R. Due to such flows, the suspension polymerization is conducted with sufficient stirring to thereby obtain polymer particles having a low coarse particle content.
