To produce a polymer having a high molecular weight and a narrow distribution of the molecular weight by carrying out an emulsion polymerization using a radical polymerization initiator, a transition metal compound and a specific compound capable of coordinating with a transition metal.
(A) A radical polymerization initiator (preferably potassium persulfate, or the like), (B) a transition metal compound (preferably a halide of Cu, Fe, or the like), and (C) a compound selected from a compound represented by the formula R1-Z1-(R'-Z2)n-R2 [Z1 and Z2 are each O, S or the like; R1 and R2 are each H, a 1-20C alkyl or the like; R' is a 1-20C alkylene, an arylene or the like; (n) is 0-6] or the formula [R4 to R7 are each H, an aryl or the like; R" is a 1-4C alkylene or a 2-4C alkenylene: (m) is 0 or 1] or a porphyrin derivative, a phthalocyanine derivative and a naphthalocyanine derivative and capable of coordinating with a transition metal (preferably 4,4'-di- t-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine, etc.), are used to carry out an emulsion polymerization. Thereby, a polymer having ≥10,000 number-average molecular weight and ≤5 molecular weight distribution is obtained.
