PURPOSE: To produce a preform capable of removing a binder at a lower temp. and having higher productivity by removing the binder by treating a mixture containing a ceramic fiber or a metallic fiber and a specified binder in a prescribed atmosphere after transforming the mixture.
CONSTITUTION: In this method for producing the preform consisting of ceramic and/or metallic fibers by transforming by injection molding or extruding the mixture containing one (example: a fiber consisting of Al2O3, ZrO2, SiO2, Y2O3, Si3N4, SiC, Si, Fe, B and Ti) of these fibers and a thermoplastic binder and removing the binder, polyoxymethylene is sued as the binder and, after transformation, this binder is removed by treatment in a gaseous acid-containing atmosphere or a gaseous BF3-containing atmosphere. According to the above way, the binder is removed at the lower temp. and the preform is produced with higher productivity.
