Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain propargyl ethers under moderate conditions in a short time by allowing phenolic compounds to react with propargyl chloride in the presence of an iron catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Phenolic compounds are allowed to react with propargyl chloride in an organic solvent in the presence of 1 to 2 mol base in respect to each 1 mol phenolic OH group at 0 to 100°C, preferably at 20 to 80°C, under 5 to 10 bar, preferably atm. pressure, thereby obtaining aromatic propargyl ethers. The new propargyl ethers of formula I, e.g. 1,1-bis-(4-propargyloxyphenyl)-3,3,5- trimethylcyclohexane, can be obtained by this process. In the formula I, R' is H, methyl; X is formulae II to IV (wherein R is H, a 1-22C alkyl).
