To obtain the subject compound in high yield with suppression of by-products as aminomethylpyridine in an industrial scale by using a palladium and copper carried on activated carbon as a hydrogenation catalyst.
When cyanopyridine is catalystically hydrogenated in an acidic aqueous solution (for example, sulfuric acid), palladium and copper carried on a activated carbon is used as a catalyst. This catalyst is prepared, for example, by adding a soluble palladium salt as palladium chloride or palladium bromide and a soluble copper salt as cupric sulfate, cuprous sulfate, cupric chloride or copper acetate are simultaneously added to an aqueous solution in which activated carbon is suspended with stirring to allow these metal compounds to adsorb onto the activated carbon, then adding caustic soda to make the mixture alkaline, adding formalin and heating them to effect reduction reaction, then separating the catalyst by filtration and washing the catalyst with water.
