Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance useful as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals, etc., easily in high yield, with short steps, by the catalytic reduction of 2- or 4-cyanopyridine with hydrogen in the presence of a noble metal hydrogenation catalyst in an acidic aqueous solution.

CONSTITUTION: Pyridinemethanol can be produced by the catalytic reduction of 2- or 4-cyanopyridine with hydrogen in the presence of 0.1W20% noble metal hydrogenation catalyst (based on the cyanopyridine) in an acidic aqueous solution at 40W70°C under normal pressure W 100atm. The catalyst is Pd supported on alumina, diatomaceous earth, etc., and the acidic aqueous solution is hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, etc., diluted with 0.5W10 times weight of water. The amount of the acid is 1W10mol per 1mol of the cyanopyridine.
