PURPOSE: To obtain a quaternary ammonium carbonate ester useful as a bleach precursor material in detergent compsns. advantageously in that the ester may be separated from a reaction medium only by the least possible post processing without the generation of chlorinated hydrogen by-products and without environmental pollution.
CONSTITUTION: A compd. of formula I ((R1 to R3 are respectively a 1 to 20 C alkyl, alkenyl, etc.; R4 is an alkylene, a cycloalkylene, etc.); Z- is a univalent to multivalent anion which induces charge neutrality when bonded with Q+ at an adequate ratio, and in this case, Z- is sufficiently oxidatively stable as it does not significantly disturb the bleaching by peroxycarbonic acid; Q is N, P) and arbitrarily, L-OH) L is formulae II to IV; (R5 is a 1 to 12 C alkyl; Y is H, a water-soluble unit, such as SO3-M+ or COOM+, M+ is an anion to provide solubility to ester is subjected to an ester exchange with a compd. of the formula R8OC(O)OR8 (R8 is phenyl, a 1 to 20 C alkyl, etc.) at 25 to about 230°C and, thereafter, the objective compd. of formula V (A is formula VI; B is A, R1, L) is separated from the other components of the reaction, by which the compd. is advantageously obtd.
