PURPOSE: To manufacture many and diversified kinds of titled rack shafts without many cutters and installations by joining and fixing rack tooth profile pieces which are manufactured to a prescribed shape and are hardened if necessary to the tooth profile forming parts of a bar-shaped material at prescribed intervals and helix angle by using a jig.
CONSTITUTION: The rack tooth profile pieces 1 made into the prescribed shape having a substantially flat base are manufactured of a single material or by cutting a long-sized drawn material and are hardened if necessary. Such pieces are fitted to the jig 5 having the fitting grooves 6 at the prescribed intervals and helix angle and are pressed to the bar-shaped material 2 formed with a prescribed flat part 3 for the bottom. The pieces are brazed or press-welded under heating according to the required strength. The pieces 1 may be joined to the prescribed position of the material 2 by the turning of an electrode cylinder 7 fitted to the outside circumference and the correlative motion of the material 2 and may be electrically welded. Many and diversified kinds of the rack shafts are manufactured without requiring the many cutters and large-scale installations required with the conventional practice.
