Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a high-purity copolymer in good yields, by copolymerizing ethylene with an α-olefin and a nonconjugated diene by a suspension polymerization method, adding a 5W8 C hydrocarbon and recovering the copolymer by steam stripping.

CONSTITUTION: Ethylene is copolymerized with an α-olefin (e.g., propylene) and a nonconjugated diene (e.g., 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene or dicyclopentadiene) in the presence of a catalyst comprising a titanium chloride compound (e.g., titanium trichloride) and an organoaluminum compound (e.g., diethyl-aluminum chloride) by a suspension polymerization method. Prior to the step of recovering the copolymer, a 5W8 C hydrocarbon (e.g., n-hexane) in an amount of 5W40pts. vol. per 100pts. vol. α-olefin is added, and the copolymer is recovered by steam stripping to obtain the purpose rubbery copolymer.
