PURPOSE: To produce a semipermeable membraneous product with superior mechanical strength and semipermeability by forming a keratin-contg. substance, into a membraneous shape, subjected to decomposition with an enzyme and reduction.
CONSTITUTION: To 1 part by wt. of a keratin-contg. substance such as wool, hair or feathering are added 0.1W0.5 part of an enzyme-decomposing enzyme such as papain or ficin, 0.1W0.5 part of an activating agent such as cystine and 20W100 parts of water. The resulting soln. is adjusted to pH 6W7 and decomposed with the enzyme at 30W65°C for 30 minW8 hr to obtain a finely divided decomposition product. The product is then reduced with a reducing agent such as thioglycolic acid in a liquid medium such as water stable to reduction and having an affinity for the keratin-contg. substance. A soln. of the reduced substance in a solvent such as formic acid is spread on a substrate such as glass plate, and the solvent is evaporated to produce a desired semipermeable membraneous product.
