PURPOSE: To inexpensively obtain a shock-resistant liquid crystal switching element and a display device by using a ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture containing an olephilic compd. for a liquid crystal material and applying continuous and periodical voltage till the liquid crystal layer shows bookshelf orientation or quasi-bookshelf orientation before starting the operation.
CONSTITUTION: This switching element consists of two supporting plates having at least one orienting layer, at least one polarizer attached to the supporting plate, and a liquid crystal material injected into the space between the two supporting plates. The liquid crystal material to be used here consists of a ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture containing at least one kind of a liquid crystal basic component and at least one kind of an olephilic compd. added to the component. Before starting up the element, continuous and periodical voltage is applied on electrodes of the switching element or a display device till the liquid crystal layer shows bookshelf or quasi-bookshelf orientation. Thereby, the obtd. liquid crystal switching element and the display device have excellent shock resistance and can be produced at a low cost.
