Abstract:
PURPOSE: To rapidly reduce initial pH and obtain a silage with excellent nutritive value, by adding specific amounts of lactic acid bacteria and formic acid together to a silage raw material and accelerating initial lactic acid fermentation.
CONSTITUTION: Lactic acid, such as lactic acid bacilli, in an amount so as to provide ≥1×105 initial number of bacteria per g silage raw material and formic acid in an amount of 0.05W0.20wt.% based on the above-mentioned raw material expressed in terms of 85% formic acid are added to the silage raw material, such as pasture grass, to accelerate initial lactic acid fermentation. Thereby the initial pH can be rapidly reduced without killing the lactic acid bacteria and excellent silage is obtained.
