To produce a substituted chloroaromatic compound useful as a raw material for a crop protecting agent and a drug at high yield in a state almost free from isomers by a simple process using easily available starting materials.
This substituted chloroaromatic compound of formula II [R1 to R5 are each H, a 1-10C alkyl, a (substituted) 6-10C aryl or a halogen, and at least one of R1 to R5 is different from H] is produced by reacting a substituted phenol of formula I with dichlorotriphenylphosphorus. As the compound of formula I, e.g. monochlorophenol, monochlorocresol or dichlorophenol is cited. As a compound of formula II, e.g. dichlorobenzene, dichlorotoluene or trichlorobenzene is cited. The reaction is carried out by adding a compound for formula I at a molar ratio of 0.5-1.0, preferably 0.8-5 based on the initially added dichlorotriphenyl. The reaction is preferably carried out in an inert solvent.
