Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain in high yield in an economically advantageous way with long catalyst life succinic acid useful as a food additive or organic intermediate, etc., by catalytically hydrogenating maleic acid at a specified carbon monoxide concentration in the gaseous phase of the reaction system.
SOLUTION: When maleic acid (A) is to be brought into contact with a hydrogenating catalyst (D) in an aqueous medium (B) in the presence of hydrogen gas (C), the concentration of carbon monoxide (E) in the gaseous phase of the reaction system is set at ≤2000ppm. For example, the component C is fed into the reaction system containing an aqueous solution of the component A and the component D to hydrogenate the component A batchwise while controlling the E concentration in the gaseous phase of the reaction system at the specified level; alternatively, a stationary bed packed with the component D is fed with the aqueous solution of the component A and the component C with the E concentration set at the specified level and the unreacted component C after the reaction is circulatingly used, thus continuously hydrogenating the component A.
