PURPOSE: To obtain a tetracyclododecene derivative in high conversion and selectivlty by continuously supplying a (di)cyclopentadiene compound, an olefin compound and an intermediate product to a piston-flow reactor and subjecting the components to thermal addition reaction.
CONSTITUTION: This tetracyclododecene derivative of formula III can be produced by reacting a cyclopentadiene compound and/or a dicyclopentadiene compound with an olefin compound of formula l (R1 to R12 each is H, a 1-10C hydrocarbon residue, a halogen or a univalent organic group ; R9 and R10 or R11 and R12 may together form a bivalent hydrocarbon group or a ring) and a compound of formula II. The reaction is carried out by continuously supplying the reaction raw materials to a piston-flow reactor and subjecting the materials to Diels-Alder type thermal addition reaction at 80-200°C. The compound of formula III is useful as a raw material for transparent resins and resins for optical use.
