Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled resin useful as, e.g., a raw material for carbon composites, good in shape retentivity in its carbonization, by incorporating mesophase pitch with a specific plasticizer and carrying out a reaction on melting of the resultant blend with a crosslinking agent comprising hydroxymethyl group-contg. aromatic compound.

CONSTITUTION: First, mesophase pitch of a softening point ≥230°C as the raw material is incorporated with, as the plasticizer, a polycyclic aromatic compound of a softening point ≤180°C and fa value ≥0.9 or a mixture with said aromatic compound predominant. Thence, the resultant blend and a crosslinking agent comprising a second aromatic compound having at least two hydroxymethyl or halomethyl groups are allowed to react on melting at ≤220°C in the presence of an acid catalyst such as p-toluenesulfonic acid, thus obtaining the objective resin. Said plasticizer and crosslinking agent are preferably naphthalene and di(hydroxymethyl)benzene, respectively.
