To obtain a thiol compound in a high selectivity and yield at a high reaction rate by reaction between an unsaturated compound and hydrogen sulfide in the presence of a combination of specific nitrogen-contg. compound(s) with a specific polysulfide compound and/or sulfur.
This thiol compound of formula III is obtained by reaction between (A) an unsaturated compound of formula I (R1 is H or methyl; R2 is H or a 1-18C hydrocarbon) and (B) hydrogen sulfide in the presence of a combination of (C) at least one kind of nitrogen-contg. compound selected from the group consisting of nonsubstituted amido group-bearing amide compound and amide compound bearing amido group with the N-site substituted with a 16C hydrocarbon group, etc., with (D) a polysulfide compound of formula II (R3 is H or methyl; R4 is H or a 1-18C hydrocarbon; (x) is an integer of 2-5) and/or (E) sulfur. It is preferable that the amounts of the component C and the component D and/or the component E to be present are 0.01-5 and 0.02-5 and/or 0.0020.1wt. times based on the component A, respectively.
