PURPOSE: To obtain a compound useful as a raw material for acrylate resin by using inexpensive raw materials by two-state reaction in high yield, by esterifying a saturated carboxylic acid with methylal and subjecting a prepared saturated methyl carboxylate to aldol condensation reaction.
CONSTITUTION: A saturated carboxylic acid is reacted with methylal in the presence of an oxygen-containing gas by the use of a catalyst (e.g. ammonium metavanadate supported on silica) at 200W450°C in a gas phase. A prepared saturated methyl carboxylate and a formaldehyde-containing gas are brought into contact with an aldol condensation catalyst at 250W450°C to give the aimed substance. An alkali metallic compound of group I of the periodic table supported on a silica compound is preferable as the aldol condensation catalyst. A molar ratio of the saturated carboxylic acid to methylal is 0.5W3.0 and a molar ratio of oxygen in the oxygen-containing gas is methylal is 0.05W1.2.
