Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a process for producing a hydroxyl-containing vinyl compound in high yield and selectivity on an industrialscale at a low cost at a high reaction rate to complete the reaction in a short time compared with conventional process.
CONSTITUTION: A hydroxyl-containing vinyl compound is produced by reacting a vinyl compound of formula I [X is CN, COR0 or COOR0 (R0 is H or an organic residue)] with an aldehyde compound at 10-150°C especially 40-80°C in the presence of a t-amine compound (preferably an N-methyl compound, especially trimethylamine) and water in an amount sufficient to form a water phase at the end of the reaction. In the above reaction, the molar ratio of vinyl compound/aldehyde compound is ≥2 (especially 2.5-8), the molar ratio of t-amine/aldehyde compound is 0.2-2 (especially 0.4-0.8) and the water is used preferably in an amount to form a binary phase system consisting of an organic phase and an aqueous phase by the reaction solution throughout the reaction, i.e., from the start of the reaction, during the reaction and at the end of the reaction.
