Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain vitamin A acid at a low cost in high yield by oxidizing vitamin A aldehyde in the presence of an acidic substance using an alkali metal chlorite.
CONSTITUTION: The objective vitamin A acid can be obtained by oxidizing vitamin A aldehyde using pref. 1 to 1.8 molar times of an alkali metal chlorite, based on the vitamin A aldehyde, at a concentration of pref. 15-30wt.% (e.g. sodium chlorite) in the presence of 1 to 6 equivalents, based on the alkali metal chlorite, of an acidic substance (pref. phosphoric acid) at pref. 0-20°C under an inert gas atmosphere.
