PURPOSE: To efficiently obtain the subject composite causing no slipping out by impregnating a base material with a solution containing both a water-soluble ethylenic unsaturated monomer convertible into water absorptive polymer and a radical polymerization initiator, sandwiching the resultant base material with polymerization-inert surfaces and then by carrying out polymerization.
CONSTITUTION: A base material 10 (e.g. polypropylene nonwoven fabric) is immersed in an aqueous solution 4 containing (A) a water-soluble ethylenic unsaturated monomer [pref. (meth)acrylic acid or its salt] convertible into water-absorptive polymer through polymerization and (B) a water-soluble radical polymerization initiator (e.g. persulfate). Thence, the resultant base material is put to thermal polymerization in a sandwiched state between a pair of endless belts 1A and 1B consisting of glass fiber or metal such as steel with polymerization-inert surfaces facing each other followed by introduction into a hot air drying machine 6 where a drying is made, and the resulting product is rolled on a roll 8, thus readily obtaining the objective water absorptive composite in high efficiency using simple apparatuses.
