Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain the title foam having a high rate of absorption of an aqueous liquid, especially a highly viscous aqueous liquid such as blood, excelling in the absorption and retention of such a liquid and being useful for sanitary and medical articles by treating a specified polyurethane foam with a surfactant. CONSTITUTION:A water-absorptive polyurethane foam is produced by treating a polyurethane foam, obtained by reacting a polyether polyol having a polyoxyethylene unit content of 40wt.% or above with an organic polyisocyanate in the presence of a blowing agent, a catalyst and a foam stabilizer, with a surfactant. This polyurethane foam has a high rate of absorption of an aqueous liquid, especially a highly viscous liquid such as blood, and excels in the absorption and retention of such as liquid. Therefore, like the conventional hydrophilic polyurethane foams, the above foam can be desirably used not only for toys, cosmetic things and washing aids but also for applications where the absorption and retention of liquid are necessary, such as applications to sanitary and medical articles such as sanitary napkins and disposable diapers, and applications in agricultural and forestry fields such as freshness retentives for vegetables, water retaining materials and wetting materials.
