To obtain the subject resin excellent in weatherability and alkali resistance, etc., and useful for e.g. coating materials and inks, by chain extension of a specific urethane prepolymer under specific conditions followed by dispersing the resultant polyurethane in water followed by conducting a radical polymerization.
This water-based urethane compound resin is obtained by the following process: a polyol is reacted with an organic polyisocyanate in unsaturated monomer(s) essentially containing an unsaturated monomer bearing at least two hydroxyl groups and one unsaturated group in one molecule (e.g. glycerol monoacrylate) to form an unsaturated monomer solution of an isocyanate group-terminated urethane prepolymer bearing unsaturated group and having a number-average molecular weight of ≤20,000 followed by chain extension of the prepolymer in the presence of a hydroxyl group-contg. organic solvent (e.g. isopropyl alcohol) to afford an unsaturated monomer solution of a polyurethane which, in turn, is dispersed in water to form an aqueous dispersion of the polyurethane, which is then subjected to radical polymerization.
