Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a water-soluble and/or water-dispersible polyester useful for sizing textile threads by subjecting dimethyl terephthalate, a dimethyl sulfoaryldicarboxylate, and ethylene glycol to transesterification, esterifying isophthalic acid and additional ethylene glycol, and conducting the polycondensation.
CONSTITUTION: A water-soluble and/or water-dispersible polyester having terephthalate-, isophothalate-, sulfoaryldicarboxylate-, ethylene glycol, and polyethylene glycol-derived units is obtd. by subjecting dimethy terephthalate, a dimethyl sulfoaryldicarboxylate [e.g.; dimethyl 5-(sodiumoxysulfonyl) isophthalate], and ethylene glycol to transesterification at a temp. of 220-230°C in the presence of a transesterification catalyst (e.g.; titanium aminotriethanolate, etc.), esterifying isophthalic acid and additional ethylene glycol at a temp. of 227-233°C, and conducting the polycondensation under a reduced pressure at 250°C in the presence of a polycondensation catalyst (e.g. antimony trioxide, etc.).
