Abstract:
PURPOSE:To prevent the surface of crystal from being whitely roughened by covering grown crystal so as to surround it in the case of growing single crystal wherein rare earth elements are added to yttrium fluoride lithium single crystal in inert gas. CONSTITUTION:The proper amount of powdery fluoride of rare earth elements is mixed with YF and LiF having about 99.95-99.995% purity in the dry inert gas. This mixture is introduced into a vessel made of 'Teflon(R)' and molded into a columnar state. This molded body is introduced into a crucible made of carbon and a cover made of carbon having a hole in the upper part is fitted to the crucible. This molded body is heated and melted in inert gas. Seed crystal is inserted into this melt through the hole of this cover and brought into contact therewith. Single crystal is grown and pulled up. Thereby vaporization of the constitutional component of crystal from the surface thereof is minimized. Yttri um fluoride lithium-based single crystal is obtained wherein the surface of crystal is prevented from being whitely roughened.
