The projecting device is provided with a projection system including a spatial optical modulation element (SOM) 36 and a projection lens 12 for projecting an image corresponding to an inputted image signal, the light source lamp 37a for emitting light to the SOM 36, a range finding processing part 43 for measuring a distance to an image projection surface, an illuminance sensor 46 for measuring ambient illuminance, a zoom driving part 38 for changing a projection angle of view (zoom), and a control part 39 for determining the emitted light quantity of the light source lamp 37a in accordance with the distance, the illuminance and the zooming, and then, controlling a lamp control part 37 to drive the light source lamp 37a.
