To decrease the aberration such as the distortion aberration or chromatic aberration of a projected picture caused by a projection lens in a projection type display device.

When a projection lens to be used in this projection type display device is a lens causing the positive distortion aberration, a display area 14 shown by Figure 1 (A) is obtained. By properly designing the pixel arrangement and the pixel shape of the area 14, the area 14 is barrel-shaped as a whole. By setting such pixel arrangement and pixel shape, the geometric shape of an object is reproduced as a picture having no distortion. When the projection lens used in this device is a lens causing the negative distortion aberration, a display area 24 shown by Figure 1 (B) is obtained. By properly designing the pixel arrangement and the pixel shape of the area 24, the area 24 is spool- shaped as a whole. By setting such pixel arrangement and pixel shape, the geometric shape of the object is reproduced as the picture having no distortion.
