PURPOSE: To provide a projection type picture display device capable of being used even in a room having no space where an external screen is set or on the outside of a room which is easily influenced by sun beam.

CONSTITUTION: This device is equipped with a slide cover 24 provided on the inner side of a main body cover 4 so that it can slide and having guide pins engaging in guide grooves 36 formed on the right and left inner side surfaces of the main body cover 4 on right the and left outer side surfaces, a screen holding frame 39 pivotally supported at the trailing edge part of a rear side main body case 2 so that it can freely turn and having guide bosses 41 engaging with the guide grooves formed on the right and left inner side surfaces of the cover 24 on the right and left outer side surfaces, a transmission type screen 38 held by the holding frame 39, a reflector moving mechanism 50 moving a reflector 46 to the front position of a projection optical system 7 in response to sliding action to the front side of a front side main body case 3, and light shielding plates 44 pivotally supported on the right and left side surface parts of the case 2 so that they can freely turn and shielding light on both sides of the holding frame 39.
