To provide a projection type video display device provided with plural lamps as light source capable of precisely adjusting the brightness of projected image.
The projector comprises: a light source unit 50 including plural lamps 501-504; a light modulating section that modulates the light beams from the light source unit 50 corresponding to input image signals; and a projection lens 62 that projects the light beams modulated by the light modulating section. The light modulating section includes liquid crystal panels 5R, 5G and 5B each associated with R, G and B light respectively and a prism block 60 that performs color composition with the light beams output from the liquid crystal panels 5R, 5G and 5B. The projector further comprises: an illuminance sensor 10 disposed between the liquid crystal panel 5G and the prism block 60 for detecting quantity of the light beams modulated by the liquid crystal panel 5G; and a controller that controls the quantity of the projection light output from the projection lens 62 based on the values detected by the illuminance sensor 10.
