Synthetic light by composing light is formed at two steps, whereby a center axis P being a crossing spot of a light composing surface 12b and a light composing surface 13b exists on the outside of an area on the optical path of the synthetic light PL, and the linear unevenness on the projected image caused by light's passing at the spot where the light composing surfaces cross when the light is composed is avoided. Since the direction of the optical path is changed by using an optical path changing member, the projector having high saturation and suitable for display in the dark by using a liquid crystal light valve being the light transmission type optical modulator is obtained.
