To provide a pulverized coal firing apparatus comprising a means for measuring the flow rate of air injected from a nozzle of a burner which gives the air a swirling flow and injects the air and a means for optimizing swirling intensity and the feed amount of the air on the basis of measurements so as to suppress NOx and reduce unburnt matter.
A torque detector 124 measures a force applied on a guide vane 122 by passing air through a swirling device 121. A control device 134 obtains the flow rate of air on the basis of the force and an angle of the guiding vane 122 and obtains swirling intensity on the basis of the flow rate of the air and the angle of the guiding vane 122, and optimizes the flow rate of the air and the intensity of swirling by means of a guiding vane angle control device 131 and a secondary air flow control device 133 on the basis of the flow rate of the air, intensity of swirling, load signal, analytical data of exhaust gas and the like. Thus, uniform air flow can be formed in a peripheral direction by an air nozzle, and factors for causing unstable flame can be removed and NOx can be suppressed to reduce unburnt matter.
