PURPOSE: To enhance the precipitatability of excess sludge and the efficiency of separation in a precipitating cell, by letting excess sludge-contg. waste water flow as an upward current through a pretreating cell to grow the flocks of the excess sludge, and then introducing it into the precipitating cell for separating the excess sludge.
CONSTITUTION: Excess sludge-contg. waste water A is fed into a nearly vertically-arranged long pretreating cell 1 through its bottom part, and its upward current is controlled to flow upwards at a uniform speed by a rectifying blade 2. The waste water A is formed into the upward current inside the pretreating cell 1 and continuously fed from a recovering position at the top of the cell 1 through an introducing pipe 3 into a precipitating cell 4. Excess sludge (a) in the waste water A is precipitated and separated on the bottom of the precipitating cell 4 and then continuously or intermittently withdrawn through a sludge- widhdrawing pipe 5. Supernatant purified water (b) is let continuously overflow beyond an overflow weir 6 at the top of the precipitating cell 4, collected in a qutter 7 and then discharged through a purified water-withdrawing pipe 8.
