To obtain high-purity brassylic acid useful as raw materials of perfumes or flavors and free from offensive odor in high yield relatively easily by recrystallizing it using butyl acetate as a solvent in the purification of fermented brassylic acid.
Into fermented brassylic acid obtained by oxidizing both the ends of a 13C normal hydrocarbon preferably derived from petroleum naphtha or the like through organic acid fermentation with microorganism such as yeast into dicarboxylic acid is added 1-5 pts.wt. of butyl acetate (e.g. n-butyl acetate or i-butyl acetate) based on 1 pt.wt. of the brassylic acid, and the mixture is heated at 100-115°C to dissolve it. Subsequently, active carbon preferably in an amount of 2-4 wt.% based on the brassylic acid is added to the solution, and they are heated at 50-100°C for 10-60 min for an absorption treatment and hot-filtered, and the filtrate is cooled preferably to 5-10°C to obtain a high-purity brassylic acid through recrystallization.
