PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound with industrial ease by carrying out pretreatment using an inorganic basic substance and purifying crude pentachloronitrobenzene containing hexachlorobenzene as an impurity using the vacuum distillation method.
CONSTITUTION: Before vacuum distillation of crude pentachloronitrobenzene containing hexachlorobenzene as an impurity, the crude compound is pretreated with an inorganic basic substance (oxide, hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate of alkalline metal or alkalline earth metal is especially preferable) in advance. The pretreated crude pentachloronitrobenzene is subsequently melted or dissolved in nitrobenzene or a chloronitrobenzene and the molten crude compound or the mixture solution is distilled under vacuum to obtain the objective high-purity pentachloronitrobenzene. The abovementioned method can be readily commercialized and pentachloronitrobenzene is useful, e.g. as a technical product for an agricultural soil fungicide.
