PURPOSE: To remove the by-produced alkali or alkaline earth metal halide, easily and completely from the reaction mixture for the preparation of phosphazene polymer, and to purify the phosphazene polymer, by dissolving the phosphazene polymer obtained as a reaction product in a water-insoluble solvent, and contacting the reaction mixture with water.
CONSTITUTION: The dihalogeno-linear-polymer of formula I (X and X' are halogen; R and R' are alkyl or aryl which may have substitutent group; n is 7W 50,000) is dissolved in a (halogenated) aromatic solvent, etc. and mixed with a solution prepared by dissolving an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal alkoxide or aryloxide in a proper solvent (which does not cause the precipitation of the polymer by mixing). The mixture is stirred under heating and separated into liquid layers. The solvent layer is washed with water several times to remove the alkali halide produced as a by-product and exsisting in the produced phosphazene polymer of formula II, and the purification of the polymer is completed thereby.
