PURPOSE: To remove impurities, e.g. sulfur or nitrogen oxides, efficiently even from an engine oil containing an additive for prefenting the premature deterioration, by adding a polyhydric alcohol to a lubricating oil, and passing a DC current across two electrodes.
CONSTITUTION: An engine oil is introduced from an inlet 8 of a cover 5 and a central hole (10a) of the top insulator 10 into the inner electrode 3, made to flow in an oil purifying bath 2 and then flow from an outlet 9 and hole (10b) to the outside of an electrostatic oil filter 1. A DC current is made to flow from the inner electrode 3 (negative electrode) through the engine oil to the oil purifying bath (positive electrode) 2, and the temperature of the oil is increased to dissolve a polyhydric alcohol, ethylene glycol, impregnated into a collecting material 20 into the oil and distribute uniformly in the oil. Thus, impurity particles charged negatively with electricity are made to flow to the positive electrode 2 and adhere to the inner peripheral surface of the collecting material 20.
