NEW MATERIAL:5-Decyl-2-(4-decylphenyl)pyrimidine of formula I.

USE: Useful as a component of ferroelectric liquid crystal materials capable of realizing quick response.

PREPARATION: A reaction is made in the presence of sodium alcoholate between an amidine hydrochloride of formula II and an alkylmalonic diester into a dihydroxy modification of formula III, which is then put to halogen substitution using e.g. phosphorus oxychloride into a dichlorinated modification of formula IV. Thence, this compound is dehalogenated in the presence of a base, thus giving the objective compound of the formula I.
