PURPOSE: To obtain coke with low moisture content and low scatter of said content, by quenching by sprinkling red-hot coke on a coke quenching car taken out of a coke oven at a higher sprinkling rate than that for prior art.

CONSTITUTION: Red-hot coke 6 taken out of a coke oven is carried to a quenching tower 1 by a quenching car 11 running on rails 10. Quenching water 2 is sprayed over red-hot coke with layers of 400W800mm thick by a sprinkler 5 at a spraying rate of 3m3/min or above for each ton of coke. Sprinkling period is determined and controlled with the timer set in the quenching car.
