To obtain the subject new compound having suppressing actions on the production of interferon γ from active lymphocytes and useful as an active ingredient of a therapeutic agent for autoimmune diseases.
This compound is represented by formula I [R1 to R4 are each H a halogen, amino, an acyl, an acylamino, hydroxyl group, a (substituted)lower alkyl or a (substituted)lower alkoxy], e.g. a compound represented by formula II. For example, the compound represented by formula I is obtained by condensing the corresponding hydroxybenzaldehyde with 2,6-diisopropylamine with an acid (e.g. sulfuric acid), providing bis(4-amino-3,5-diisopropylphenyl)- hydroxyphenylmethane and then oxidizing the resultant compound. The above compound is useful as an active ingredient of a medicine for treatment and/or prophylaxis of autoimmune diseases caused by an abnormality in the immune system, e.g. multiple sclerosis or rheumatism. The daily dose of the medicine for an adult is preferably 1-3,000 mg.
